Government Shutdown Would Have Been Reckless and Needlessly Hurt Border Patrol and Customs Agents: Rep. De La Cruz (TX-15)

Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz issued the following statement:

"Since my first day in office, I have worked tirelessly to offer South Texans responsible, common-sense leadership in the People’s House. A government shutdown would have been reckless and needlessly hurt Border Patrol and Customs agents, veterans, and working families across South Texas and America. While today's vote prevented that scenario, it is important to stress that band-aid solutions are not what the American people want. This drama was also unnecessary.

The vast majority of House Republicans had reached a consensus that included border security funding and would have begun putting us on a fiscally responsible trajectory. Unfortunately, this was not possible because certain DC Republicans voted with Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats. As I, and others, predicted, these made-for-cable-TV theatrics accomplished little — no spending reductions, no funding for border security, nothing, nada.

Thankfully, through productive collaboration with Speaker McCarthy and the Texas delegation, we have received assurances that the House will soon vote on a supplemental border security package. My office will play a leading role in this initiative, and I look forward to working with my colleagues on this crucial legislation."
